Laboratory Tests:
interleukin-18 (IL-18) assay
Synonyms:  none
Usage:  evaluation of patients with hematologic malignancies
Method:  semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry
Specimen:  blood or bone marrow
Comments:  IL-18 is elevated in patients with certain hematologic malignancies and might be involved in the proliferation of certain leukemic cells in vivo through an autocrine mechanism
Source:  Adapted from Zhang B, Rao Q, Zheng G, et al. Expression and significance of IL-18 in the bone marrow of patients with hematological diseases. Chinese Medical Journal 2003;116(2):218-221.
Diagnostic Procedures:
magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography in suspected biliary disease
Synonyms:  none
Indications:  to estimate the overall sensitivity of magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) in suspected biliary obstruction and to evaluate clinically important subgroups
Method:  observers graded study quality, which included blinding, use of a single (versus composite) gold standard, and nonselective use of the gold standard
Normal Findings:  MRCP had a high overall pooled sensitivity; the procedure was less sensitive for stones, odds ratio, and malignant conditions than for the presence of obstruction
Comments:  MRCP is a noninvasive imaging test with excellent overall sensitivity and specificity for demonstrating the level and presence of biliary obstruction; however, it seems less sensitive for detecting stones or differentiating malignant from benign obstruction
Source:  Adapted from Romagnuolo J, Bardou M, Rahme E, et al. Magnetic cholangiopancreatography: A meta-analysis of test performance in suspected biliary disease. Annals of Internal Medicine 2003;139(7):547-554.
Surgical Operations:
robot-assisted navigated neuroendoscopy
Description:  Evolution 1 Precision robot neurosurgical tool for precise steering of instruments with the cranium; a hexapod robot or Stewart platform was selected as the most suitable kinematic structure for the operating robot; the mobile platform will accept different types of surgical instruments; rigid ventriculoscope was fixed to the instrument holder and registered for neuronavigation; lens scopes connected to a video unit were used; after registration, burr hole was placed; using a joystick, the neurosurgeon guided the movements of the ventriculoscope and slowly moved through the brain tissue to the ventricles or cystic lesion; endoscope inserted into the ventriculoscope and procedure continued; completed as necessary for the specific lesions; ventriculoscope slowly moved upward and procedure finished
Anatomy:  brain; cranium; horn of ventricle; ventricular wall
Equipment:  Evolution 1 Precision robot; endoscope; hexapod robot; Stewart platform; joystick; lens scope; ventriculoscope; video unit
Source:  Adapted from Zimmerman M, Krishnan R, Seifert V. Robot-assisted navigation neuroendoscopy. Neurosurgery Journal 2002;51(6):1446-1450.
