Laboratory Tests:
anti-human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) autoantibody testing
Synonyms:  none
Usage:  evaluation of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma
Method:  enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
Specimen:  serum
Normal Range:  n/a
Comments:  the anti-human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) autoantibody is a new marker specific for hepatocellular carcinoma
Source:  Adapted from Masutomi K, Kaneko S, Yasukawa M, Arai K, Murakami S, Kobayashi K. Identification of serum anti-human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) auto-antibodies during progression to hepatocellular carcinoma. Oncogene 2002;21(38):5946-5950.
Diagnostic Procedures:
helical computer tomography for assessment of acetabular osteolysis
Synonyms:  none
Indications:  early detection of acetabular osteolysis is important as patients are sometimes asymptomatic until the occurrence of extensive bone loss
Method:  helical computed scans were taken and evidence of osteolytic lesions on these compared with radiographs taken postoperative and recently; two-dimensional wear analysis via digitized radiographs was made and the results compared with loss of bone volumes calculated from the computed tomography scans
Normal Findings:  helical computed tomography identified more occurrences of acetabular lysis than radiographs
Comments:  helical computed tomography is more sensitive in identifying and quantifying osteolysis after total hip arthroplasty than plain radiography
Source:  Adapted from Bhandari M, Devereaux PJ, Guyatt G, Cook D, Swiontkowski M, Sprague S, Schemitsch H. Use of helical computed tomography for the assessment of acetabular osteolysis after total hip arthroplasty. The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery 2002;84(4):609-621.
Surgical Operations:
arthroscopic autologous chondrocyte transplantation
Description:  arthroscopic surgical technique for tissue-engineered cartilage grafting using a keyhole technique with an inside-out meniscus repair; periosteal patch harvested and placed over cambium layer facing bone, sealed with fibrin glue, and autologous chondrocytes injected under the patch
Anatomy:  knee; articular cartilage; patella
Equipment:  arthroscopic instrumentation; in vitro chondrocyte allograft; absorbable suture
Source:  Adapted from Cole B, DiMasi M. Single-stage autologous chondrocyte implantation and lateral meniscus allograft reconstruction. Orthopedic Technology Review 2000;2-3.
